DANCING THROUGH THE DECADES:  A 6-WEEK SERIES!

Were you born too late in the 20th century to fully experience the richness of American dance?  Are you two generations removed from knowing the folk dances from your immigrant grandmother’s village?  Do you just want to move and have some fun doing it? 
DANCING THROUGH THE DECADES will introduce you to the folk styles, and the historical and cultural contexts that that contributed to the formation and evolution of social dance in the United States.   Come to one, or all!

Week 1: Pre 20th Century (African Appropriation)

RIMARKABLE DJ LESSONS
Starting April 19!

This course is designed to allow students to develop their personal voice and true intention as a DJ.  Thus, contributing to their growth and development as an artist, and introduction to the disc jockey profession.  By the end of the class, students will be have, gained knowledge of the history of the DJ, working knowledge of the current trends and standard in DJ equipment, with the sole purposes of troubleshooting and having the ability to utilize DJ equipment in most environments, an increased awareness of several genres of music, current and past, gained familiarity with various DJ techniques, specifically: beat matching, beat counting, blending, phrasing and an introduction to harmonic mixing, a working development of their inner voice as a DJ.  The student will have a general idea of their personal style and intention when performing and will have opportunity to showcase their new skills at a live performance event.

A POET'S GUIDE TO THE STAGE [workshop]

Recently commissioned for the Crime Jazz Festival in Amsterdam, Hanifah Walidah’s A Poet’s Guide to the Stage is a unique workshop that challenges standard poetry performance practices. The workshop encourages participants to re-examine their work to find the living characters within their words whose stories are often muzzled by first-person perspective writing and performance. Both an abridged and full day work shop that focuses on character development, stage presence and ensemble performance. Dates and Location to be announced.


 

READING MUSIC
Wednesdays, Starting May 19
6 fifty-minute sessions
Collective Member: Amar Goodman
Cost: $150


This class will teach the fundamentals of reading and understanding written music.  Topics covered will be scales, intervals, chords and musical notations.  A great class for guitar or piano players that have learned to play by ear and want to really know what the chords and other notes mean
.

 

AWESOME AB HOME WORKOUT
1 thirty-minute session

Cost: Free!

CLASS FULL!

This one time class was created by popular demand for short, daily home workout tips for abs. Get it in now to be in shape year round. Work on your abs even 15 minutes a day for an effective strengthening and core building.

RACE & ART
2 one-hour sessions

Two consecutive Tuesdays 7-8pm

Cost: Free!
CLASS FULL!

This class will cover different People of Color movements around the world and in the U.S. and how they use culture, creativity and art as a tool for social change.

 

There is a minimum of 3 students required for a class to continue into session. This is so that the teachers are sufficiently covered for their time. Class maximum is at the discretion of the teacher and will vary from topic and class.

Registration deadline for a class is 7 days prior to first session of the class.
