Freedom Trainers is based on an analysis of white supremacy, male supremacy, capitalism, hetero-normativity, gender binaries, adult privilege, body norms and imperialism, as systems of privilege and oppression in which a privileged group benefits at the expense of peoples and nations without such privileges. All of these systems have detrimental manifestations in our society and are intimately connected with one another. An understanding of these interlocking oppressions, and how to begin dismantling each oppression, lies at the foundation of our mission.

Freedom Trainers is unique in that we offer trainings with long term personal commitment and compassion, working together until there is positive change within the organization. We take our work "beyond diversity," to truly challenge tokenization, internalized oppression and conventional power structures.

We believe that strong organizing should come from within one's own community. we believe that the leaders of the labor movement are the workers, leaders of the youth movement are youth, the leaders of the trans movement are trans folks, the leaders of indigenous movements are native peoples, and so on. This belief leads us to have a variety of trainers with experience in specific areas, but to also cultivate this leadership within your organization. We also are committed to upholding the processes and values that we believe in within our work.

All of our trainings are and have been authored by trainers all over the country who have been organizing around specific issues, whether it be immigrant rights, youth organizing, labor organizing or direct action. We use methods of popular education, which emphasize an equal exchange of learning and teaching between the trainer and participants, as well as bring practical experiences to the work.

We believe in a system of accountability by which we will not only evaluate ourselves internally, but we will have our communities evaluate us frankly on an ongoing basis. We work with the groups we are training very closely to nurture commitment and dedication from both parties while we are working together.

Ultimately, it is our goal to make long term change against oppression by working with you. We are committed to helping your organization unravel oppression together.
